Obama Gives Virtual Commencement Speeches for Classes of 2020

barack and michelle obamaFormer President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are joining an all-star lineup of celebrities honoring the Class of 2020, which has had its graduation season upended by the COVID 19 pandemic.

The one-hour special, Graduate Together: America Honors the High School Class of 2020, will air simultaneously on NBC, ABC, CBS, and Fox on Saturday, May 16 at 8 p.m. EDT.

Special guests will include LeBron James, Malala Yousafzai, the Jonas Brothers, Yara Shahidi, Bad Bunny, Lena Waithe, Pharrell Williams, Megan Rapinoe, H.E.R. and Ben Platt. The event is hosted by XQ Institute, The LeBron James Family Foundation, and The Entertainment Industry Foundation.

Barack is also slated to give a streamed commencement speech for graduates from historically black colleges and universities (HBCU’s). That program, “Show Me Your Walk, HBCU Edition,” will air online and on major networks on May 16 at 2 p.m.

“Dear Class of 2020,” a YouTube special, will air on Saturday, June 6, 2020 and feature global leaders, celebrities, creators and more, including Malala Yousafzai, Sundar Pichai, former Defense Secretary Bob Gates, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys, and Kerry Washington.
