Marshay Proctor-Bates, a Success Coach at A-B Tech, is increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of the Minority Male Success Initiative.
A-B Tech’s Minority Male Success Initiative was established to improve the college completion rate of minority male students by focusing on student success, and maximizing student and campus participation.
Proctor-Bates, MSW, LCSW-A, Academic Advisor, Instructor, and Success Coach, along with student and scholarship recipient Ralph Day, recently visited the No Limit Radio Show, hosted by Leronica Casey and Duane Adams. She explained that it takes relationship building to increase student participation by providing learning opportunities as well as engagement activities.
As a Success Coach, Proctor-Bates meets with each student to create an individualized plan for him to achieve success, including identifying potential obstacles and challenges. In addition, she helps students connect with A-B Tech and community resources, reflect on progress, and gain specific skills that will support him in achieving goals. Available resources include A-B Tech’s writing center, academic learning center, and support services.
Since the start of the Minority Male Success Initiative, additional programs have been added, such as the Minority Male Success Luncheon, Fitness with Friends, Relationship Talk Series, and Scholarship Workshops.
By creating learning that is active and collaborative and empowers students to become active citizens on campus and in their communities, Marshay Proctor-Bates is committed to showing students that she is dedicated to their continued success.
