Asheville School Junior to Attend Governor’s School

Asheville School junior Ian Van Wye has been selected to attend the 2012 session of Governor’s School of North Carolina. He will participate in the French discipline of the five-week session of Governor’s School, which is held on the campus of Meredith College in Raleigh.

“I am interested in pursuing a career in either international affairs or international business, and French is one of the primary languages spoken in the diplomatic world,” said Van Wye. “It is also the lingua franca of much of Africa, a region which I am particularly interested in due to its unparalleled potential for economic development.”

Van Wye, known for his academic endeavors and involvement with
extracurricular activities at Asheville School, is very enthusiastic
about this opportunity to further his education.

“I am excited to
practice speaking French with a wider variety of people, especially
considering that I will not be in a traditional classroom setting for
much of the time – simply conversing with other students and teachers in
French will in many ways be the most valuable component of the
experience. I want to attain a higher level of competence as a French
speaker, thus preparing me for French VI Literature next year,” said Van
Wye.

Governor’s School of North Carolina is the nation’s oldest
statewide summer residential program for academically and intellectually
gifted high school students. The curriculum focuses on the exploration
