100 Men and Women Minority Scholarship Awarded
A-B Tech students Tiffany McDowell and Jeremy Jackson are the first recipients of the 100 Men and Women Minority Scholarship awarded through the college’s AB Tech Foundation.
Established by Samuel Abdul-Allah and Johnnie Grant, the scholarship provided two $1,000 scholarships for the 2012-13 academic year. Additional funds were contributed by community members who want to provide educational opportunities for African American students enrolled in curriculum programs at A-B Tech.
Abdul-Allah was inspired to start the scholarship after listening to a radio show discussing the disparity in jobs, quality of life, and education between African Americans and Caucasians. “We needed to get something done rather than talk about it. We set up the scholarship to close that gap,” he said. “We were told about students already here (at A-B Tech) that needed the help.”
McDowell is enrolled in the Dental Hygiene degree program after graduating with her diploma in Dental Assisting this past May. As part of her education, she works at the A-B Tech Dental Clinic, which is celebrating its 40th year of providing low-cost dental work.
“As part of a dental-health-care team, I plan to provide the community with exceptional patient care and patient education. I would also like to take part in volunteer opportunities within the community when they present themselves,” McDowell said.
Jackson, enrolled in the College Transfer program, plans to graduate in May 2013 and then enroll in a four-year college to pursue a bachelor’s degree in exercise psychology. He is also an active member of the Minority Student Leadership Academy at A-B Tech and volunteers with the Developing Future Male Leaders program, where he mentors elementary school-age children.
“I like to motivate and inspire youth. Youth are the heart of the community, so I plan to encourage them to get a superior education. I want to ensure our youth remain in school, graduate, and enroll in college. My aim is to mentor future generations,” Jackson said.
