Odyssey Community School’s 4th-5th grade class won second place in the elementary group literary contest for the N.C. Museum of History.

The students wrote a ballad about Elisha Mitchell, the professor-geologist-minister-explorer Mt. Mitchell is named for.

The class climbed Mount Mitchell, read Professor Mitchell’s journals and
letters, read other primary source documents, and listened to sections
of books about Mt. Mitchell’s history. Each student wrote a couplet to
contribute to the ballad, and the class submitted an annotated
bibliography with the ballad.

The students’ work will be part of the N.C. Museum of History’s Junior
Historian’s floor exhibit for one year. Their award was presented in
Raleigh on Friday, April 29.

In addition, three students from Odyssey’s middle school class have won
honors for the poetry they submitted to the 2011 Voices of the River
Poetry Contest, sponsored by RiverLink. Harper Robins received Third
Place for his poem; Mia Richardson and Ryan Segall received Honorable
Mentions.
