Former New York Yankee player Bobby Richardson will be the guest speaker at an August 27 dinner at Trinity Baptist Church on Shelburne Rd. in West Asheville. The dinner, to benefit New City Christian School, will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. and will include a silent auction.

Richardson joined the Yankees at age 19 and spent 12 years with the team. He was an eight-time All-Star selection and five-time Gold Glove winner at second base who played in three winning World Series with the team. He was named World Series MVP in 1960 and was American League MVP runner-up in 1962, when Mickey Mantle won the title.

After his playing career, Richardson coached baseball at the University of South Carolina, Coastal Carolina, and Liberty University, where he also served as athletic director. Since retiring in 1990, Richardson has been active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Founded in 2006, New City Christian School serves elementary students from varied racial, social, and economic backgrounds. Its program of strong foundations in academic, social and spiritual growth helps equip them with the knowledge confidence and hope to better themselves and the community.
