A-B Tech’s Green Power, an organization of students for a sustainable campus, will sponsor the Mountaintop Removal Road Show at 12:30 p.m. November 17 in the Simpson Lecture Hall on the college’s Asheville campus.

Dave Cooper, a member of the Sierra Club and Mountain Justice, will lead the free presentation. Cooper worked for a year as a coalfield organizer for the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition. He decided to devote his full attention to environmental issues after seeing a mountaintop removal mine on Kayford Mountain, W.V.

Cooper’s presentation will include a slide show and lecture on “the
devastating effects of mountaintop removal in Kentucky and West
Virginia, including what it does to the water and air quality in those
region,” said Bradley Barrett, vice president of Green Power.

The 20-minute slide show featuring traditional Appalachian mountain
music and aerial photos of decapitated Appalachian mountains will be
followed by a lecture by Cooper. The Mountaintop Removal Road Show has
been shown more than 700 times in 22 states since 2003.
