From Dr. Oralene Simmons, President, and the Board of the MLK Association of Asheville & Buncombe County –
The Martin Luther King, Jr., Association of Asheville & Buncombe County promotes Dr. King’s ideals and philosophy of nonviolence. Our Association does not tolerate and condemns in the strongest terms white supremacy, systemic racism, and violence in any form.
We strongly condemn the violent attack on our democracy on January 6 at the US Capitol Building. This seditious attempt to prevent peaceful transfer of power was a disgrace to our nation; yet it also refocused the light upon longstanding problems and divisions that beset the United States.
Now is the time to focus on rebuilding and healing our nation. We must begin by encouraging all people of good will to work together to ensure the peaceful transition of power in the United States of America.
We in the Martin Luther King, Jr., Association of Asheville & Buncombe County also look forward to the important work of harnessing the energy and determination of all Americans toward fulfilling the nation’s promise and Dr. King’s dream of equality.
