On January 1, 2016, the YMICC’s newly elected officers assumed their roles.

Elected were Stephanie Swepson-Twitty, Board Chair; Monique Taylor, Vice Chair, Leonard Jones, Secretary, and Macky Bah Treasurer. Swepson-Twitty is also the CEO for Eagle Market Streets Development Corporation.

For well over a century the YMI has continued to be a preferred location for events and exhibitions. As a meeting place it continues to hold its prominence in the Asheville community. The Young Men’s Institute (YMI) is arguably the oldest, if not the first, African American cultural institute in America.

Swepson-Twitty says this assignment is an honor and a privilege and she has “big shoes” to fill. She follows Ms. Sharon Kelly-West as immediate past Chair.

Swepson-Twitty’s immediate goals include continuing the work begun by prior board officers and members, and strengthening the YMI’s community relations. She welcomes opportunities for engagement and looks forward to working with the YMI board, staff, and community.

The YMI has achieved National, State and local recognition as an historic icon. Learn more at www.ymiculturalcenter.org
