What Are You Doing for Others?
The public is invited to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday by answering Dr. King’s question, “What are you doing for others?”
On Monday, January 20, Land of Sky Regional Council and Hands On Asheville-Buncombe will come together to create volunteer opportunities for people of all ages to give back to their neighbors, their friends, and their community. The free event will be held at Land of Sky Regional Council from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
The event will include multiple stations where volunteers can participate in projects that directly support local nonprofits. Volunteers will have the opportunity to create:
• simple no-sew fleece blankets for Project Linus clients
• bookmarks to be inserted in donated books distributed by the POP Project
• “adopt me” bandanas for Asheville Humane Society’s shelter pets
• math skills flashcards and games for Asheville City School elementary students
• handcrafted cards of encouragement for local veterans
Last year, more than 150 volunteers gathered at Land of Sky Regional Council to work on United Way “Hands On” service projects that benefited local nonprofits and schools in the region.
“Many of these projects gave added value to nonprofit programs, such as the Valentine’s cards for Meals on Wheels clients. Staff is truly appreciative of the work that volunteers put in to allow them to provide this special act of kindness to their clients. This simple project addressed the isolation and loneliness that many homebound seniors experience,” said LeeAnne Tucker, Director of Aging and Volunteer Services at Land of Sky Regional Council.
