Hector Contreras

By Adam Hillberry

Hector Contreras is a touching guy. His wife says he is the work of a miracle.

While working at the H&B Grocery on State Street, he was attacked and robbed. They shot at him three times and all missed: one lodged in the steering wheel, one in the gas pedal and one was found lose in the passenger floor board.

Through his loss, Contreras finds strength to continue his pursuits.

“You’ve got to forget what happens. You’ve got to get up with new ideas and fight,” Contreras said.

On Wednesday, Contreras opens up the Havana Restaurant #2 and Little
Bonnie’s Corner with his wife, Bonnie. They offer Miami style Cuban
sandwiches and coffee amongst other Cuban cuisine.

There is a certain amount of risk to everything, and running a business
is a lot like running a car, according to Contreras. “Sometimes, you
buy a car with no money, but it takes care, just like a business. What
is amazing about it is the time that passes. You’ve got to put one
hundred percent towards your car or business,” Contreras said.

Contreras is from Colombia, but loves the flavors of Cuba. “It’s from
the flavors. It’s the flavors that got into me. I believe in these
flavors,” Contreras said.
