Native Ashevillian Talks About Prison Life In Newly Penned Book
ASHEVILLE, NC – Exposing what it’s truly like to spend time inside the walls of a prison, a retired warden of the Illinois Department of Corrections shares the shocking truth of what it’s like to witness gang violence, suicide and the ramifications of the death penalty in our nation’s prisons and our nation at large.
Spending multiple years trying to bring control and order to what was a highly chaotic atmosphere, author Charles L. Hinsley has written his informative book “The Anatomy of Prison Life: Behind the Walls of the Illinois Department of Corrections” to inspire and inform his readers.
“This is a story of survival,” said the book’s author. “It takes the reader from scenes of utter hopelessness to a light at the end of the tunnel so bright one can only be inspired to go past shock and anger to see what a wealth of fortitude and integrity can accomplish when given a chance.” The author goes on to discuss the horrendous schemes of insiders, and the political games that make up a system that lords over the disenfranchised found in prisons.
Hinsley’s personal experience as a correctional administrator is insightful as he is not afraid to share the power of the truth. Giving his interesting perspective taken from real-life prison encounters, the author transforms what is typically viewed as a more egregious and inhuman experience of prison life and makes it meaningful.
“An insider’s view is always more intentional. In this case, it’s also somewhat frightening because this is a bird’s eye look at prison.” added Hinsley. Bringing attention to everything that’s wrong with the current penal system in the United Sates the author provides what some say should be required reading for every student, young adult and tax paying citizen.
Hinsley is a native of Asheville, NC having graduated from Asheville High School in 1976. He is also a retired warden from the Illinois Department of Corrections with 28 years of combined correctional management and human services experience. He currently resides in Greensboro, NC and works for the North Carolina Department of Public Safety assisting probationers in connect with community service agencies to fulfill their community service obligations. He has also served as an Adjunct Instructor for North Carolina A & T State University in their Criminal Justice Department.
