Why Reparations?

Dr. Dwight Mullen speaks about the Asheville/Buncombe Reparations Commission’s efforts toward healing the racial gaps in our community.

As Professor Emeritus at UNCA, Dr. Mullen offered courses in public policy, American politics, and African and African American politics. For more than a decade, Mullen and his students produced an annual research project, “The State of Black Asheville,” collecting and presenting an array of data on health, housing, income, education, employment, and incarceration rates, and cataloging the severe racial disparities in Asheville. Now, as the chair of the Asheville/Buncombe Reparations Commission, he is leading our community toward addressing this harm.
