Melvin AC Howell, an Asheville-based choreographer, performer, and educator, understands the barriers many face when approaching dance.

“In Asheville, accessible classes for adults or teens who age out of studios are rare,” he notes.

Howell’s mission is to make dance approachable and accessible for everyone, from beginners to those aspiring to professional dance careers. So he has introduced an exclusive in-person training opportunity for serious dancers in western North Carolina, the “Commercial Dance Career Kick-Starter Program: 4 Week Incubator.” The program is tailored for those aspiring to a professional career in commercial dance, providing an intensive, supportive environment to hone their craft.

The incubator program offers participants comprehensive training, including:

Brand Building: Developing a strong personal brand, utilizing social media effectively, and learning how to monetize their dance career.

Choreographic Skills: Learning about texture and perspective to enhance choreographic accuracy and creativity.

Performance Techniques: Gaining expertise in live performance skills and camera techniques to excel in both stage and screen performances.

Professional Development: Creating a profile, dance reel, resume, and CV to prepare for auditions and job opportunities.

Additional Skills: Enhancing facial expressions, choreographic accuracy, texture, perspective, camera techniques, live performance skills, and professional headshots.

Participants will also receive one-on-one mentorship from Howell, whose extensive experience includes both performing and teaching. This mentorship aims to prepare dancers for the competitive world of commercial dance, focusing on practical skills and industry knowledge.

Classes focus on hip-hop and commercial dance, styles that build confidence and comfort in one’s body. “These are styles people can use at weddings, social events, or even at home,” Howell explains. The online platform includes a membership, granting access to all classes, live Zoom sessions, and the HAS Dance global community.

Howell’s approach ensures that everyone, regardless of experience, can find joy and confidence in dance. Through his work, he continues to inspire and support the next generation of dancers, fostering a community where dance is accessible to all.
