Local Author Jorge Redmond Shares New Children’s Book

Vibrant rhyming children’s book celebrates a host of changemakers in Black history.

Free signed copies will be available during the first annual Community Holiday Extravaganza at the Arthur R. Edington Center on Saturday, December 17, 2023.

Asheville native Jorge Redmond will read from his new children’s book, Black Boy, Black Boy at the first annual Community Holiday Extravaganza at the Arthur R. Edington Center (133 Livingston Street in Asheville) from 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, December 17, 2022. He will provide free signed copies of the book to all attending families.

Co-authored by Redmond and his longtime friend Ali Kamanda and illustrated by Ken Daly, Black Boy, Black Boy is a vibrant rhyming children’s book that celebrates a host of changemakers in Black history from around the world.

The Community Holiday Extravaganza is sponsored by the Housing Authority of the City of Asheville, Chosen PODS, Read to Succeed Asheville/Buncombe (R2S), and Buncombe Partnership for Children.

“We are so excited to share Jorge’s incredible book and celebrate the holidays in community with a free, fun, and safe event for Asheville families!” said R2S Co-Executive Director, Jacquelyn Hall.

In addition to the live reading and book giveaway, the Community Holiday Extravaganza will include a holiday market featuring BIPOC-owned businesses, children’s holidays crafts, cookie decorating, free lunch from Daddy D’s Food Truck and Cooking with Comedy, free coffee and cocoa, and more. Vendors include True Divine Accessories, Fab5ive Collection, SimplyChic Kollection, This & That Accessories, Resident 2 Resilience, The Body & Temple, Black Diamond Group, and Dope Divas, among others.
