Haywood County Arts Council and Friends of the Library Concerts

The Friends of the Library will continue a partnership with the Haywood County Arts Council to sponsor weekend afternoon concerts during the month of May.

The Blue Ridge Big Band performs on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 3 p.m. in the Waynesville Library. The band’s repertoire ranges from traditional big band music (Glen Miller, Count Basie, Benny Goodman) to contemporary jazz (Chick Corea, Chuck Mangione), to popular music of the last few decades.

Sean Gaskell will perform at the Canton Library branch on Sunday, May 22, 2016 at 3 p.m. His performance features traditional songs on the 21 stringed West African Kora.

The Kora is native to the Mande peoples who live within the countries of Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea, and Guinea Bissau. The music is traditionally played by oral and musical historians known as Griots (Gree-ohs). Gaskell has been featured at numerous festivals in the U.S., Gambia, and Senegal.
