2013 was an incredible year for Valerie June. An artist of extraordinary depth and talent, June’s debut album Pushin’ Against A Stone, released by Concord Records in August, earned some of the year’s most glowing reviews.
Produced by Kevin Augunas and Dan Auerbach, Pushin’ Against A Stone showcases June’s astonishing songwriting and singular sound, a blend of rural roots and country, bridging Alan Lomax-inspired acoustic field recordings with biting, electric indie-blues.
June, whose voice percolates somewhere between Dolly Parton and Billie Holiday, wrote or co-wrote all but one of the record’s 11 tracks.
