Reuter Center Singers to Present ‘60s Folk Songfest

The Reuter Center Singers will present a ‘60s Folk Songfest at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 15, at UNC Asheville’s Reuter Center. A chorus of more than 50 voices, the Reuter Center Singers stage spring and fall concerts at the North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement, and perform in many other community venues, including Biltmore House, the Veterans’ Administration Hospital, churches and retirement homes.
The ‘60s Folk Songfest will include Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land,” music recorded by the Kingston Trio and many others, and anthems that are reminders of the civil rights and peace movements, like “We Shall Overcome” and “Where Have All the Flowers Gone.”
“I was surprised that the music seems just as important now as it did when I was a young girl,” said chorus-member Lynda Feldman. “When I sing the music again, I’m re-inspired.” Chorus Director Chuck Taft says the folk songs of that era “speak to all people no matter where they stand on the political spectrum. These are great songs about people working hard and their struggles through times of trouble and uncertainty.”
