Staff Reports
Diana Wortham Theatre’s new “Laugh Out Loud” Series presents Shakespeare On Trial, an uproarious experience in “Shakespearean” theater that asks the audience, the “jury,” whether writer William Shakespeare is guilty of irrelevance in a modern world. Writer/creator Jeremy Webb plays four of Shakespeare’s most famous characters (Macbeth, Iago, Hamlet and Juliet) as they encounter the Bard, played by Simon Henderson.
In the play, an unwitting Shakespeare must defend his own writing as the four characters challenge him to write in a more modern way, arguing that no one really understands his plays anymore. Ultimately the audience helps make the case for Shakespeare’s lasting significance, as the playwright calls upon them to help prove his point.
Shakespeare On Trial’s Asheville performance is made possible
by Michael & Catty Andry, Joel & Deborah Bohan Berkowitz, and
Dr. Richard E. Howell.
