Staff Reports
The award-winning Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company will bring its lavish production of Serenade/The Proposition, based on the life of Abraham Lincoln, to Asheville’s Thomas Wolfe Auditorium on April 15. The production, hailed by the Chicago Sun-Times as “a thing of immense beauty and consequence,” will be the final concert of the season for Asheville Bravo Concerts.
Who is Bill T. Jones? Why is his name so familiar? If you watched the 64th Annual Tony Awards last June you might have seen Jones accepting his second Tony for Best Choreography, for the Broadway smash Fela!
Or perhaps you watched him receive his Kennedy Center Honors award
last December, alongside “The Third Most Powerful Woman in the World”
and a former Beatle. Jones’ fellow honorees Oprah Winfrey and Paul
McCartney know what everyone should know by now—that Bill T. Jones is
one of the most distinguished and honored dancers and choreographers of
our age.
Video of Serenade/The Proposition can only suggest what a
dazzling multimedia experience this piece is live on stage. Jones’s
inventive choreography supports the company’s dance virtuosi with
recorded sound-collage, acting, projection video, and a live musical
score that combines such classical elements as Mozart’s Requiem with
stirring arrangements of folk songs and hymns from the Civil War era.
In keeping with its mission to enrich local culture and serve
area youths, Bravo is offering discounted and subsidized tickets for
area public schools, church group and other youth organizations. In
parallel with this concert, a select group of students from YMI Cultural
Center, LightShare, and Hillcrest Community Enrichment Center will
receive special Modern Dance Master Classes free of charge at the Ballet
Conservatory of Asheville, following which the students will attend the
show for free. Public school educators or youth organization leaders
interested in applying for subsidized tickets can contact the Bravo
office.
