Lamar Hylton Recognized

Dr. Lamar Hylton was recently honored and recognized by Reverend Dr. Keith Ogden and members of Hill Street Baptist Church during the church’s Men and Women’s Celebration.
Dr. Hylton served faithfully at Hill Street Baptist Church as a member of the deacon ministry, Hill Street music department, chair of the Youth and Education team, and as the church’s director of operations.
Lamar R. Hylton, Ph.D. is a native of Columbus, OH and was educated in the Columbus Public Schools system. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Vocal Music-Performance from Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD; a Masters Degree in College Student Personnel from Ohio University in Athens, OH; and a doctorate of philosophy in Higher Education Administration from Morgan State University. He has recently accepted a position as Assistant Vice Provost for Student Experiences in the Office for Student Affairs at the University of Minnesota.
Until this summer, Dr. Hylton served as Director of the Intercultural Center and Office of Multicultural Student Programs at the University of North Carolina Asheville. While serving at UNC Asheville, he was very involved in the greater Asheville community. Dr. Hylton served on numerous boards, including the YMI Cultural Center, MLK Association of Asheville, Eagle-Market Streets Development Corporation, Our Voice, and the UNC Asheville Center for Diversity Education.
“Dr. Hylton has been an invaluable asset to the greater Buncombe County community, said Dr. Ogden. “He has been a stellar role model for our youth and young adults, also an incredible asset to our academic community; he will be surely missed. It is past time that our community recognized the contributions African Americans continue to make in Buncombe County and take great strides to make sure they remain in our communities,” Ogden concluded.
Dr. Hylton is married to Rhonda Hylton, an educator and CEO of “Rhonda Hylton Writes” editing company. They are the proud parents of a daughter, Emilee.
