The Asheville Jazz Orchestra offers a musical tip of the hat to the generation that came of age in the heyday of big band swing with a special Father’s Day show at the White Horse Black Mountain. Few musical styles have been as durable as swing, and the call of the horns and rhythm section still has the power to get feet tapping.

The 17-piece Asheville Jazz Orchestra was founded in 2006, dedicated to live performance of swing classics and showcasing new repertoire. They play classics from Swing Era royalty like Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Benny Goodman, but they also include later progressive big band charts from the likes of Thad Jones, Stan Kenton, and area composers.

The players in the Asheville Jazz Orchestra have earned their chops with big name touring bands like the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Mel Tormé, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, When Swing Was King, and Guy Lombardo’s Royal Canadians. Together, the members of the AJO are dedicated to both preserving and advancing the timeless sounds of big band music.

The Asheville Jazz Orchestra performs big band jazz beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 15. Tickets are $15; $12 for fathers. Call (828) 669-0816, or visit www.whitehorseblackmountain.com for more details. The White Horse is located at 105c Montreat Road in Black Mountain.
