goombay_05428065The YMI Cultural Center will revive its annual Goombay Afro-Caribbean Festival after a year’s hiatus. The new event will be September 12-14 on the Roger McGuire Green at Asheville’s City-County Plaza. The 2014 festival will include a free throw competition, a fashion show, cooking demonstrations, and other activities.

One of the main goals for Goombay this year and moving forward is creating partnerships with different groups and schools in the community. On Friday, Sept. 12 the festival will host a dance party as part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign. The YMI has invited area schools’ dance teams to participate in the friendly competition which features an audience-favorite vote and gifts for each dancer.
