The fifth annual West Asheville Garden Stroll will be held Saturday, September 14, 2013.

The theme, “Play in the Garden,” will be highlighted during family-friendly kickoff ceremonies in Christopher Mello’s whimsical garden at 307 Waynesville Avenue featuring native plants and earth-friendly drainage solutions. Whee Ahh Faerie Kin, a performance troupe of magical beings, will inaugurate the 2013 stroll with heart-full songs, faerie mist, and other delights at 10:30 a.m.

At Chris Peterman and Beverly Button’s home, the couple constructed a dry stream bed of river rock with two holding ponds—a beautiful and earth-friendly solution for the hills and gully terrain of this neighborhood.

The 2013 stroll includes approximately 15 gardens centered along Westwood Place and Waynesville Avenue. Participants will see a variety of permaculture features, setups for chickens and bees, vegetable beds for sunny spots and other possibilities for shade, garden art, and wild spaces.

The route for the stroll includes a number of historic homes in West Asheville’s oldest residential neighborhood. Asheville-based Bee City USA will provide an educational exhibit on creating sustainable habitats for pollinators, and homes for non-hiving bees will be on view.

To encourage edible landscaping and beautification of community spaces in West Asheville, the West Asheville Garden Stroll planning team is announcing community gardening seed money grants ($100-250) for the 2014 gardening year. Citizens and community groups are eligible for grants and community-oriented projects visible from the street. Additional details are available on the website.

Maps of the tour and information about featured gardens will be available at the kickoff on September 14. Strollers are encouraged to walk, bike, or carpool. Limited parking will be available at Westwood Baptist Church, 150 Westwood Place.
