The Paradox of Persuasion
Ty Jones to speak at the Ethical Humanist Society of Asheville’s January meeting.

“The Paradox of Persuasion: Motivating Americans to Sacrifice Present Consumption for the Future” will be presented by Ty Jones at the Sunday, January 19, 2025, meeting of the Ethical Humanist Society of Asheville.
The meeting will be held from 2:30 – 4 p.m. at the Friends Meeting House, at 227 Edgewood Road, Asheville, NC, and available for interactive participation by Zoom. All are welcome to attend.
Jones will explore why the Environmental Movement has mostly failed to motivate people to change their consumption behaviors, in part by comparing how dark episodes in the nation’s history—the Trail of Tears, the profitable slave trade, modern school shootings—show that knowing something is morally wrong won’t necessarily change behaviors, in particular in terms of the convenient consumption, corporate profit, or national policy.
Jones [the Rev. Deacon John Tyler Jones] was born and reared on a farm near Pittsburgh, PA. He earned a BA in history (John Carroll University) and MBA (Gannon University), and later attended Virginia [Episcopal] Seminary. Ty was ordained a deacon at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC in 2012.
