Buncombe County Democrats Re-Energize African American Caucus

Creating stronger ties and better communication.

Jennifer Horton (candidate for Buncombe County District 1 Commissioner), Kathie Kline (Buncombe County Democratic Party Chair), and Shea Drummond-Johnson (former BCDP Vice Chair).

The African American Caucus (AAC) of the Buncombe County Democratic Party (BCDP) is planning regular meetings to discuss and address the issues specifically facing African American members of our community.

Led by former BCDP Vice Chair Shea Drummond-Johnson and Buncombe County District 1 County Commission candidate Jennifer Horton, this group invites all African American residents in the county to add their thoughts and suggestions.

The first meeting of the Caucus will be held Saturday, April 27, 2024 from 2-4 p.m. at BCDP Headquarters, 951 Old Fairview Road, Asheville, NC 28803.

“Sometimes, with all that’s going on in the country and the world, people forget to focus on the needs and issues facing our own communities,” said Ms. Drummond-Johnson. “We are going to make sure that Black people have a safe and open forum to share their own experiences and suggestions for a better Buncombe,” she added.

Ms. Horton added, “While out campaigning during the Primary, I heard from African American voters who wanted more support from the local Democratic Party. I also heard from the BCDP that they would welcome guidance on what we feel is most needed. We’re going to find ways to give them that.”

BCDP Chair Kathie Kline is very positive about the potential for the AAC, saying “We are delighted that Shea and Jennifer are reactivating this Caucus to amplify African American voices within our Party. We will all benefit from the stronger ties and better communication this group will foster in our community.”
