The 2024 SVMLK Prayer Gathering will be held on February 10, 2024, during Black History Month.

Ernest J. Grant, PhD, is the Interim Vice-dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the Duke University School of Nursing and the immediate past president of the American Nurses Association. The ANA is the nation’s largest nurse’s organization, representing 4.3 million registered nurses. He is the first man to be elected to the office of president of the ANA. Dr. Grant also serves as adjunct faculty for the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Nursing.
In each of the past four years, Dr. Grant has been recognized by Modern Healthcare Magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare. He has been nationally recognized for his work addressing racism, equity, and inclusion within the nursing profession. In 2002, President George W. Bush presented Grant with a Nurse of the Year Award for his work treating burn victims from the World Trade Center site.

The Swannanoa Valley Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Corporation offers scholarships to students at Charles D. Owen High School and Community High School. The organization was founded in 1990 and held their first prayer breakfast celebrating Dr. King’s birthday at Ridgecrest Conference Center on January 12, 1991. Previous speakers have included Delano E. Lewis, Former Ambassador to Republic of South Africa, Harvey Gantt, then Mayor of Charlotte, Naomi Tutu, and many other notables.
