Woke Homeschooling
Through discussion questions and dedicated reflection time, students learn to think critically about historical and contemporary issues of race and class.
Woke Homeschooling exists to encourage and empower parents to teach their kids a more inclusive history.
Oh Freedom! is a book created by Delina Pryce Mcphaull, a mom who grew weary of all the stories (even the historical fiction) told from the perspective of the colonizers. Mcphaull believes that the history of Native Americans, African Americans and immigrants must be more than an after-thought.
As a homeschool mom, Mcphaull explored US history with her children. However, using a traditional curriculum she found she had to search for supplemental sources extensively.
What was missing from that traditional curriculum?
- ️ Centering African-American perpectives
- ️ Stories from the points of view of displaced Native Americans
- ️ Many of the hard topics of US history
- ️ A worldview that was inclusive and truthful
Mcphaull refused to expose her kids to this view of US history. She stepped into the freedom of homeschooling and created her own guide to US history, drawing on some great resources and putting it together into a structure for her children to learn.
Mcphaull is a former journalist and freelance writer, editor, podcaster, and editorial consultant who homeschools her three children. After crafting her own guide to US history for her children, she created Woke Homeschooling to provide resources for parents to educate socially-conscious children who will grow to become wise and informed world-changers. Her curriculum can be found in Oh Freedom, an incredible resource that centers the histories of the indigenous and marginalized.
Use Oh Freedom to take your children through 40 weeks of US History, from the pre-colonial era where Native nations flourished, to the present, where we’re grappling with the results of a complicated past. All resources have been curated and organized for parents to educate their children. Through discussion questions and dedicated reflection time, students learn to think critically about historical and contemporary issues of race and class.
Using A Young People’s History of the United States (Zinn), An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States (Dunbar-Ortiz), Heart & Soul (Nelson), and many other books, students will learn history through the eyes of Native Americans, African Americans, and immigrants.
