Engineer II

Hiring range $67,157 to $82,302 salary will depend on qualifications and experience. The District offers a highly competitive benefits package.

Job Duties

Under general supervision, performs professional engineering work of complexity in the Engineering Division for the Metropolitan Sewerage District of Buncombe County. Work involves plan review and engineering design related to Capital Improvement Projects, including sanitary sewer rehabilitation, treatment plant rehabilitation, and new construction projects undertaken by the District. Employee will provide overall project management and is responsible for designing collection system and treatment system improvements, preparing construction plans and specifications. Employee will work with the public, contractors, Director of Engineering, and other MSD staff to explain project intentions, and to obtain and provide necessary information. Employee is responsible for review and approval of work performed by consultants or staff for construction of Capital Improvement Projects. Supports Director of Engineering in technical, fiscal and project management functions. Employee must also exercise considerable tact and courtesy in frequent contact with property owners, residents, vendors, various governmental agencies, and the general public. Reports to Director of Engineering.

Minimum Training and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in civil or environmental engineering and a minimum of 5 years of experience in sanitary sewer system construction and design work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.

• Professional Engineer (PE) is required.

• Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

• Registration as North Carolina Professional Engineer

Construction Operator I

Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply for the Operator I position currently open in the System Services Division. Open until filled.

Starting pay is $14.25. Starting pay with CDL’s is $15.00

Applicants who have experience driving a dump truck and trailer are highly encouraged to apply.

Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled to skilled work in the maintenance, repair and installation of sewerage lines, locating breaks, leaks and stoppages, operation of motorized equipment and vehicles. Uses various associated equipment, hand tools and power driven equipment for the Metropolitan Sewerage District of Buncombe County. Work involves operating a variety of vehicles and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of sewerage lines. Work also involves performing manual labor tasks while not operating equipment. Physical strength and endurance are required to perform manual labor for extended periods of time, possibly in adverse weather and working conditions. Initiative and independence of action are required while operating equipment at the work site. Reports to the Construction Crew Leader or System Services Construction Manager.

Minimum Training and Experience

• Graduation from high school or GED, or equivalent experience

• 0 to 2 years of experience in line construction work

• Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina;

• CDL-A preferred

• Ability to read, add, subtract, multiply and divide

Collections System Operator 1

Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply for the Collections System Operator 1 job currently open in the Sewer Maintenance Division. This position is open until filled.

Starting rate $14.25/ hour. Starting rate with CDL is $15.00

Job Duties

Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled to skilled work in the maintenance of sewerage lines, operates a high-pressure vacuum truck used in the cleaning of wastewater lines; investigates the location of wastewater lines, taps, manholes and various connected equipment; uses standard hand tools and power driven equipment for the Metropolitan Sewerage District of Buncombe County. Also uses specialized techniques and knowledge in televising sewer lines to locate leaks and stoppages. Work involves operating a variety of vehicles and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of sewerage lines. Work also involves performing manual labor tasks while not operating equipment. Physical strength and endurance are required to perform manual labor for extended periods of time, possibly in adverse weather and working conditions. Employees are subject to OSHA Blood Borne Pathogens. Initiative and independence of action are required while operating equipment at the worksite. Reports to the SS Maintenance Supervisor.

• Graduation from high school or GED

• 0 to 1 years of experience

• Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina; CDL preferred

• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide
