Artists Selected for “Smart Space” Artist-in-Residency Program

Staff Reports

The City of Asheville Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department is pleased to announce that three local artists have been selected for the first “smART space” artist-in-residency program.

The three-artist team — Melissa Terrezza, Sean Pace, and Jeremy Russell — was selected through a juried competition and has been awarded a $1,500 honorarium. The residency will take place in the street-level storefront at the Pioneer Building – located at 190 Broadway in Asheville across from the Dripolator coffeehouse – and will last through March 3, 2012.

Public access to the space and time to talk with the artists about the
project will be available on Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m.
Times are subject to change. This residency will culminate in a public
opening presentation of the completed works in February 2012 at 190
Broadway.

The “smART space” program is designed to provide free, short-term access
to vacant storefront space for visual, performing, and new media
artists or artist teams for the creation and presentation of new works.
Plans for future “smART space” residencies are currently in development.
