Three Young Audiences Shows at the Diana Wortham Theatre

Staff Reports

Wednesday & Thursday, November 16 & 17 at 10 a.m.

The Rivalry is “the poet laureate of radio” Norman Corwin’s riveting depiction of the Lincoln-Douglas debates. Drawing dialogue from original transcripts, The Rivalry brings to life the epic clash between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas in their 1858 Illinois Senate race – which ultimately ended in an “across-the-aisle” relationship – while illuminating the most controversial issues of the day: slavery, race, freedom, equality, states’ rights and America’s future.

Monday & Tuesday, November 21 & 22 at 10 a.m. and 12 noon.

Children will delight in Madeline and the Bad Hat. When the Spanish Ambassador moves into the house next door, Madeline quickly discovers that his son Pepito is a true horror! But when Pepito unexpectedly finds himself in real danger, it’s up to the resourceful Madeline to get him out of it. This original musical captures the blithe yet touching spirit of Ludwig Bemelmans’s beloved Madeline series.

Asheville’s Billy Jonas comes to the stage for two shows, one at 10 a.m. and one at 12 noon. Billy Jonas is one of those rare performers who can engage and delight both young and adult audiences. Making innovative use of “found objects” (buckets, broom handles, bottles, keys, and more) as well as traditional instruments, Billy helps audiences discover the music within common items and within themselves.
