City Begins Leaf Collection, Free Leaf Bags Made Available

The City of Asheville is preparing for leaf collection which will begin November 8. The sanitation division collects leaves in two separate ways. Bagged leaves are collected on one schedule and loose leaves are collected on another schedule. Residents relying on either method should separate leaves from trash and other waste, placing leaves at the curb away from the street and storm drains. Burning of leaves is not permitted by city ordinance.

COMPOST. Composting provides the easiest and most efficient means for
leaf disposal. Residents can run a mulching mower over leaves to
compost them directly into their lawn. They may also rake leaves into a
pile, which will decompose into a rich soil additive for spring gardens.

BAGGED LEAF COLLECTION. Residents are encouraged to bag their leaves
since bagged leaves are collected more frequently than loose leaves.
Sanitation crews collect bagged or containerized leaves once a month on a
year-round basis and twice per month in December. A limited supply of
free leaf bags will be available on a first come first served basis to
city residents at city of Asheville fire stations. Please note that if
personnel at the Fire Station are responding to a call, they will not be
available to assist until they return to the station.

Residents should place unsealed bagged or containerized leaves at the
curb by 7 a.m. on the Monday of their scheduled collection week. Crews
will remove the leaves by the end of the week. Residents’ bags or
containers will be left for reuse after collection.
LOOSE LEAF VACUUM. The city collects loose leaves twice during leaf
season according to the vacuum schedule. Residents should rake leaves to
the curb by 7 a.m. on the scheduled start date for their area and
expect vacuum collection to occur up to 15 days later.

Fresh leaves can be delivered to your home or business at no cost. Call
(828) 251-1122 for information on applying to receive loose leaves. For
