The A-B Tech Foundation has established a scholarship fund in memory of A-B Tech graduate and fallen Asheville Fire Department Capt. Jeff Bowen.
Bowen, a 13-year veteran of the department, died July 28 after responding to a fire at a medical office building at 445 Biltmore Ave. He was a 2007 graduate of A-B Tech with an associate degree in fire protection technology and had taught in the college’s Continuing Education Division for two years.
“At A-B Tech, we had the privilege of working with Captain Bowen first as a student, and then most recently as an instructor,” said Skye Myrick, Associate Dean of the college’s Emergency Services Academy. “By creating this memorial scholarship to honor him, it will continue to exemplify his passion for education and his steadfast determination to improve skills, not only in himself, but in others.”
A $1,000 Capt. Jeff Bowen Memorial Scholarship will be awarded this fall to a student in the Fire Protection Technology program who has at least a 2.5 grade point average and demonstrates financial need.
“We are hoping to grow the scholarship so it can be awarded annually to a deserving student who would embody the dedication and commitment to serving others that was the essence of Capt. Bowen’s life,” said Sana Efird, Executive Director of College Advancement.
Anyone interested in donating to the scholarship fund should contact the A-B Tech Foundation at (828) 254-1921, ext. 176 or [email protected].
