The International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) is observed around the world each year on the same date.

In observance of 2016 Peace Day (September 21), WNC 4 Peace and partners are now in the midst of planning activities and events open to the public.

Area students have submitted essays, artwork, poetry and videos in celebration of Peace Day to an Art for Peace competition, open to all students through high school. Winning artists will have $100 contributed to their schools in their names.

An Authors for Peace Panel is scheduled for Sunday, September 18 at 2 p.m. at The Block off Biltmore, 39 S. Market St. Authors planning to read from their works include poet DeWayne Barton, founder of Hood Huggers International; Asheville City Councilman Cecil Bothwell; writer and activist Clare Hanrahan; community activist Kyle Ann Ross; and progressive talk-show host Jeff Messer from 880 the Revolution. Admission will be free, and authors will offer their books for sale. The Block will offer a pop-up brunch at 1 p.m. preceding the readings.

On Sept. 20 at 7 p.m., the Center for Spiritual Learning will host a Drumming Peace Circle at 2 Science of the Mind Drive in West Asheville (off Sand Hill Road).

Also, UNCA students are planning on-campus events and activities, open to the public, September 16 through 23. For more information email [email protected].

“Peace should be something we strive for every day,” WNC 4 Peace member Rachael Bliss stresses. “But at this time of year we particularly urge all organizations, businesses, schools and faith communities to plan community events for members and the public. Let us know your plans, and we’ll list them on our website at wnc4peace.com.”

Contributions associated with International Day of Peace 2016 can be sent to Treasurer Colin Neiburger at 487 Haw Creek Mews Dr., Asheville, NC, 28805. (Make checks payable to WNC 4 Peace.), or through Pay Pal on the group’s website at wnc4peace.com.
