Art Exhibit by Jasmine Washington

“How I See the World,” an art exhibit by Jasmine Washington, is on display through June 30 in Galleries 1 and 2 at the YMI Cultural Center, 39 S. Market Street in downtown Asheville.

Jasmine designed her first series of art characters as a toddler by using round bottoms of cups to make faces as she added characteristics to each. The only gifts she wanted for birthdays or Christmas were art supplies and sketch books.

As her art skills developed, Jasmine begin to create images of women to promote positive body images for girls and women, no matter the size, body shape, skin tone, hair, etc. “Every woman should be free to be herself and feel great about it,” she says. “There aren’t enough positive representations of people of color in the media and animation, so I decided to create it.”

A 2016 graduate of Asheville High School, Jasmine has balanced her academic responsibilities with working and giving back to the community.

Exhibit hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by special request. Call (828) 252-4614 or visit www.ymicc.org.
