Buncombe County Democratic Party Holds Special Election for County Commission District 3
The Buncombe County Democratic Party will hold a candidate-selection election for County Commission District 3 on Saturday June 18, 2016.
Commissioner Miranda DeBruhl, a District 3 Republican, resigned May 17. Under state law, the party she represented must name someone to fill her seat until November, and an election must then be held to choose someone for the balance of her term. Because the primary election took place in March, the District 3 executive committees of the two parties will choose candidates to be placed on the November ballot.
The Democratic Party’s District 3 Executive Committee will meet at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, at the Buncombe County Democratic Party HQ at 951 Old Fairview Road in east Asheville. Members of the public and the press are invited to attend. Only precinct chairs representing District 3 or at-large Executive Committee members may vote.
Any registered Democrat residing in County Commission District 3 is eligible to be chosen; he or she will face the candidate chosen by the County Republican Party in a similar ballot replacement process. The GOP has already named Tim Moffitt, a former state senator from Arden who was defeated in his 2014 reelection bid, to fill DeBruhl’s seat until the November election. That party has not indicated whether he will also be named a candidate for the rest of her term or, possibly, for Commission chair, for which DeBruhl was the Republican candidate.
