MLK Scholarship Nominees Announced

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville and Buncombe County, Inc. announced that eight high school students have been nominated to receive the MLK Youth Award and college scholarship.

Nominations were made by teachers, guidance counselors, pastors, and other adult leaders, and are based on a student’s character, academic success, and involvement in the community. To be eligible, a student must (1) exhibit constructive concern for disadvantaged and oppressed people; (2) participate in community, civic, or school affairs; (3) promote community human betterment; (4) speak out on issues affecting the lives of others; (5) demonstrate academic success as evidenced through high school coursework; (6) submit a 250-word essay.

The high school seniors nominated for the 2016 Youth Award and Scholarship are: Asheville High School: Saim Alam, Kai Lendzion, and Holt Mettee; SILSA at AHS: Brandon Dillingham and Sebastian York; Charles D. Owen High: Lizzeth Flores-Gonzalez and Demarcus Harper; and A.C. Reynolds High: Nallah Muhammad. Two scholarships will be awarded, for $5,000 and $2,000.

The nominees’ submissions will be judged by a panel of educators and community leaders, and the winner(s) will be announced at the 2016 Youth Award Celebration and Ceremony on June 16, at 5:30 p.m. at Ferguson Auditorium on the campus of A-B Tech.
