In honor of National Men’s Health Month, here are some tips to help kick-start your road to health.
Start Slow. Ease into a new workout routine and go at a pace that’s comfortable for you. Doing too much in the beginning can overwhelm your body. Take time to focus on your technique and breathing during each exercise. Increase the frequency of your workout rather than the intensity. Gradually increase your days of exercise each week and gauge how you feel after each workout. If you feel fine, keep adding more!
Flex Your Muscles. It can be easy to overlook stretching when starting a workout routine. But flexibility helps you get full range of motion from your joints and lengthens your muscles so you can more fully perform exercises. Warming up and cooling down your muscles also helps prevent injury and reduce muscle soreness and improve exercise performance.
Mix It Up. Switching up your workout routine does more than you may think. Benefits include a boost in metabolism, better sleep, improved mood and self-esteem, and more energy. Adding in an assortment of recreational variances like a bike ride around the neighborhood, a hike through local trails, or a few laps in the pool can help make exercise fun.
Stay Hydrated. Making sure you have enough water in your system is critical to feeling your best during a workout. It helps with blood flow, prevents muscle fatigue and gives you more energy. Avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of H2O before, during, and after your workout.
Rest Up. Don’t forget to take a break! Recovery is just as important as the workout and helps your body recuperate by repairing broken down muscle tissue. If you’re just getting back into the swing of things, it’s recommended to get one to two days of rest between workouts.
