Winston-Salem State University men’s basketball team entered Johnson C. Smith University’s Brayboy Gym on Jan. 30 ranked 24th in DIV II. The Rams are the defending CIAA champs, currently 16-4 overall and 9-2 in conference play.

WSSU’s Justin Glover and JCSU’s Trevin Parks got things rolling for their respective teams. Parks is JCSU’s long-range marksman and is quick off the dribble. Parks kept JCSU close early in this contest with his strong play.

Glover, who has been known to deliver fierce dunks, did not disappoint during this event: he had two of the meanest dunks seen among any level of play this year. The team delivered a strong defensive effort and took a 50-47 lead at the end of the first half.

At the beginning of the second half Glover drove to the basket past two JCSU defenders and connected on a dunk that ignited the entire gym. After that, the team turned up the heat and displayed what makes them the defending champs.

Asheville native Wakefield Ellison got hot and connected on five three-point attempts, and went two for two from the free-throw line. His 3-pointer with 16:33 remaining gave the Rams a 12-point lead.

The Rams went on to win the contest 92-82 and set up a great deal of excitement for the upcoming CIAA tournament, to be held in Charlotte, NC February 26 thru March 2, 2013.
