World Cup Viewing Leaves Man Dead

sport_2010_fifa_world_cup.jpgJohannesburg, South Africa – A South African man who wanted to watch the World Cup match instead of a religious program was beaten to death by his family members.

Sixty-one-year-old David Makoeya fought with his wife and two children for the remote control because he wanted to watch Germany play Australia in the World Cup series. The others, however, wanted to watch a gospel show. When Makoeya got up to change the channel by hand after being refused the remote control he was attacked by his 68-year-old wife Francina and two children, 36-year-old son Collin and 23-year-old daughter Lebogang.

“It appears they banged his head against the wall,” Malefo, a local
law enforcement officer said. “They phoned police only after he was
badly injured, but by the time we arrived, the man was already dead,”
concluded officer Malefo.

All three were arrested, but 23-year-old Lebogang was released on
$200 bail. The mother and son are still being held in custody. “He was
always a happy man, never violent,” Makoeya’s nieces, Miriam and Anna,
stated. “On Saturday, we saw him for the last time at a funeral.”

The World Cup, being played in Africa for the first time, runs
through July 11. Although most tickets for the 64-game tournament have
been sold, many in South Africa are too poor to attend.
