Thomas Wolfe Memorial Hosts African American Spirituals Program

ArtSpace_St John ladiesAs part of the Thomas Wolfe Memorial’s summer-long 2nd Saturdays “Writers at Wolfe” Series, the site will host local African American musicians.

Lucille Flack Ray sing along with musician Cathy Riley and the St. John ‘A’ Baptist Church Choir.  All will perform old-time African American spirituals, and use them as a springboard to discuss black history and a sense of community in the Asheville area and throughout the US.  Lucille Ray, author of Looking Back and Moving Forward, will also discuss how her experiences in Asheville as a young African American inspired her book of poetry.
Don’t miss this special cultural event in which we will acknowledge the past through song and literature, yet simultaneously celebrate what is to come in the future. The program will spark intrigue amongst those interested in literature and African American history and culture of Asheville.

This event will take place on Saturday, June 8, 2013, from 12 noon until 2:00 PM at the Thomas Wolfe Memorial State Historic Site at 52 N Market St., Asheville, NC.
This event is FREE and open to the public.
