The Carolina Panthers professional football team will recognize Carl Mattox at a game this August.
Mattox is a recipient of the Foundation of the Carolinas – Carolina Panthers Stadium Corporation Graduate Scholarship. He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Mars Hill University last month, and now is enrolled in the university’s master of management program.
Mattox, from Athens, Georgia, was a four-year member of Mars Hill’s football team, earning all-conference honors in his senior (first team) and junior (second team) seasons. In his junior year he also was named to the Academic All-America team for NCAA Division II by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Mattox also was active off the field, and was honored as a presidential intern during his senior year.
Grainger Caudle, economics professor and chair of the university’s business administration department, says he’s excited to have Mattox as part of the inaugural class of students in Mars Hill’s master of management program: “I know that he will bring the dedication and leadership that he exhibited in the classroom and on the field during the past four years to this new endeavor.” Mars Hill’s head football coach, Tim Clifton, says Mattox represents “the true meaning of a student athlete.”
The Foundation of the Carolinas – Carolina Panthers Stadium Corporation Graduate Scholarship is an award that grants two $10,000 scholarships each year to outstanding student-athletes who have completed their undergraduate work and are seeking support for their graduate level studies. Scholarships are awarded to one male and one female student-athlete in North Carolina or South Carolina on the basis of leadership, citizenship and academic merit.
This year’s recipients will be recognized at the Carolina Panthers game against the Houston Texans in Charlotte on August 9, 2017.
