Delta House gets a BOOST for the Arts and Technology

Staff Reports

Delta House’s “Boosting Our Outstanding Students to the Top” (BOOST) After-school program recently received a $20,000 grant from the Janirve Foundation to develop a new computer lab and to renovate the art room for students in 6-8 grades.

BOOST is one of the six sites for Delta House Life Development of Asheville, Inc. 21st Century Community Learning Center: LEAAP (Learning through Extended Academics and the Arts Program.) The students have been creating a wide variety of two and three dimensional art projects such as drawing, painting, arts & crafts. They will soon have a space to create to printmaking, sculpture, clay hand-building, and computer graphics, and also have a place to store and display their art work in the new art room.

Before and during Black History Month, the students have been studying African and African American cultures to help them understand the traditions and symbols that have meaning for the Adinkra symbols they have used in their art work and the mural project they are working on.

Students will continue to study different culture while integrating the arts with reading, math, science and technology through the school year. The art lessons are aligned with the NC Standard Course of Study.
