The Stephens-Lee Alumni Association recently celebrated its 17th reunion. In conjunction with this celebration, the class of 1952 celebrated its 60th reunion, and the class of 1957 celebrated its 55th reunion. Former students who presently reside in Asheville, and many who live in other cities and states attended this event. The earliest class that participated in this occasion was the class of 1945. Classes reminisced about the good old days, and the excellence of Stephens-Lee academics, and all of the activities and educational achievements that occurred within its magnificent walls.

Along with this celebration, a reception was held at UNCA commemorating 50 years since ASCORE (Asheville Student Committee on Racial Equality) came into existence. A memorial service in memory for former teachers and student who were a part of the Stephens-Lee family was held at Nazareth Missionary Baptist Church. Following the service everyone met at Stephens-Lee to enjoy Class Night.

During this event, President Sarah Roland Hart thanked everyone for their participation, and asked those who attended to become actively involved so that the Stephens-Lee High School’s legacy will live on. As stated by Ms. Hart, “The association needs new ideas; this requires a renewing of the mind and a willingness to work, and to commit to the cause of the association. Let us not remain divided, but come together as a community, making suggestions and asking questions. If we want to keep the rich history and culture of SLH alive, we must unite,” concluded Hart.

A formal banquet was also held for the alumni at the Asheville Events Center.
