Education is a Girl’s Best Friend

mentum) Foundation of the Asheville Branch of the AAUW (American Association of University Women) is holding a fundraiser on Sunday, June 5, from 4 to 6 p.m. The wine and hors d’oeuvres event will be held at the Fernihurst mansion at the Brumit Center at A-B Tech in Asheville.

The fundraiser will provide scholarships for women students whose college education was interrupted or delayed. Last year, Mary Donovan received a scholarship to help with her ceramic studies at UNC-Asheville. Karla Hart, another scholarship recipient, will complete her work at A-B Tech this term. She will enroll in a computer engineering program at North Carolina State. Karla said that receiving the scholarship made it easier for her to concentrate on her studies since she did not have to worry about paying for costly books.

Mary and Karla and other scholarship recipients will attend the event as will Dr. Dunn, president of A-B Tech, who will welcome those attending the fundraiser. Attendees will enjoy guided tours of the historic building along with delicious food and wine. They may choose to take part in a discounted tour of Smith-McDowell House prior to the event at 3 p.m. A highlight will be a raffle of original works by ceramist Kathy Triplett, painter Betty Clark, seriographers Dana Irwin and Tony Bradley.

Attendance is limited to 100 and tickets are $30 in advance. They can be purchased by making a check out to the GEM Fund and sending it to Jacque Morgan, GEM Treasurer, 15 Hampton Drive, Weaverville, NC 28787-9001.
