Members of the Asheville/Buncombe County League of Women Voters in cooperation with Pisgah Legal Services and the Asheville/Buncombe County Community Relations Council have developed a program aimed at meeting the needs of citizens for accurate knowledge of the way the system of justice operates in our community.

If citizens are more aware of the way the system operates they will be less fearful of it and more likely to use the system to their advantage.

A
three part series will provide an introduction to the procedures
employed in both the criminal and civil courts. The three meetings will
be held on consecutive Thursdays, April 19, 26, and May 3 from 6:00 to
7:30 p.m. in the Buncombe County Courthouse, 60 Court St., in
Asheville, NC.

Some of the
officials, such as lawyers, judges, and bailiffs, who function in the
courts will explain and illustrate their roles. To complete the
authenticity of the presentation a jury of peers will take part.

Teachers in the County school system are encouraged to participate by
receiving documentation that can be used for CEU credit. Translation
services can be provided with a five day advance notice.

The underlying
purpose of this free program is to help make the justice system in this
community better understood and accessible to all of its citizens.
