Mississippi-born jazz singer Tenya Colemon started singing at the tender age of four, and was soon performing at area churches and festivals.

The young vocalist and her family soon sought out professional teachers to nurture her natural talent, eventually including undergraduate work at the Mississippi University for Women and graduate studies at Clark-Atlanta University. Since then, the Charlotte-based singer has become a local favorite at clubs, festivals and special events. She and her group are the next installment in the White Horse Black Mountain’s Cabaret Jazz series on Friday, March 18, 2016 at 8 p.m.

Tenya Colemon’s Mississippi roots might suggest a strong blues influence. It’s there, part of her musical DNA, but her vocal style tends toward smooth rather than gritty, her voice a beautifully understated but agile instrument. Her repertoire runs the gamut of jazz standards from venerable to more recent, and she shows a special affinity for the light but assured touch required for bossa nova numbers.

Catch Tenya Colemon live on Friday, March 18, 2016 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15. White Horse, 105c Montreat Road, Black Mountain. (828) 669-0816, or visit www.whitehorseblackmountain.com.
